KidGlov, a boutique, full-service advertising, branding and content marketing agency based out of Lincoln and Omaha, Neb., recently welcomed Dr. Britta Wheeler, executive director of the Children’s Institute of Fashion Arts (CIFA), to its podcast, Agency for Change. The episode explored CIFA’s work supporting children through creative outlets and expansive learning.

“It was inspiring hearing from Britta on this podcast,” said Kelley Peterson, KidGlov chief creative officer. “While home economic programs are no longer part of school curriculums, the team at CIFA see the value home crafts and sewing can have for our youth in encouraging creativity, developing valuable skills, and even using math in practical applications.”

The Children’s Institute of Fashion Arts (CIFA) is a New York City non-profit organization devoted to expansive education in the culture and craft of clothing. They believe children gain valuable skill from the hand-on creative process and since 2016, have been teaching after school programs in public schools, and engaging school students and teachers in specialized curricula linking textiles to culture, history and society. The Creative Learning Grant from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council has allowed CIFA to offer our Fashion Arts Workshops to kids outside of school since 2017 and in 2022, they received a New York State Council on the Arts Grant to further expand their work.

During the Agency for Change episode, Wheeler shares her story of founding CIFA, how the organization reaches children throughout greater New York City, and the importance of expansive learning and the connection between hands, heart and mind.

“Sewing is knowing,” said Wheeler. “Sewing is a great way for kids to get grounded and learn through creativity and play. If you give kids the tools for easily doing it, then they can go in any direction.”
